Cloud Services

CloudServices is a proposal for using the atmospheric clouds and the microorganisms in them as the material substrate for data transfer and storage.

DNA is nature’s fundamental data storage mechanism, and its vast parallelism, energy efficiency and information density are being explored for computing, data storage and cryptography. Artificial DNA sequence can be synthesized, inserted into an organism, and retrieved using DNA sequencing. In this project we encode information into bacterium Pseudomonas syringae, a bacterium that is not only well adapted to the environment of the atmosphere but is capable of inducing cloud formation and precipitation. All cloud droplets form around small particles, a third of which are of bacterial origin (estimated 10^19 of bacteria represents storage capacity of 7504 zettabytes).
